Hindi has been the official language of the Union of India for over sixty years now. Still there are some serious issues related to the degree of its use for official purposes and its spread as well as acceptance in the society as a whole. This book highlights the socio-cultural and multilingual realities of post-Independence India and tries to examine Hindi in the context of these realities. Investigating the functional use of Hindi in various domains, it discusses at length people's acceptance of it and their loyalty as well as attitudes towards it. Also, it presents a critical assessment of the language policies and programmes pursued by the Government of India.
