Water being the most precious resource is required for domestic, irrigation and industrial purposes. Most of the Indian rivers traverse more than one state. Each of the states of a river basin tries to obtain the maximum quantity of water. This has resulted in many water disputes in the country. In many areas of the world the present is already marked by an uneasy competition among different water users and use sectors, often leading to conflicts. India particularly stands on the brink of an uncertain future, its ever-growing population putting pressure on its increasingly meagre water resources. The Interstate River Water Disputes Act, 1956 (IRWD Act) is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted under Article 262 of Constitution of India on the eve of reorganization of states on linguistic basis to resolve the water disputes that would arise in the use, control and distribution of an interstate river or river valley. Article 262 of the Indian Constitution provides a role for the Central government in adjudicating conflicts surrounding inter-state rivers that arise among the state/regional governments. This Act further has undergone amendments subsequently and its most recent amendment took place in the year 2002. This book is about the politics of water resource development and management in India. The book will interest environmental and agricultural economists, ecologists, policy-makers and planners and those in the development sector, as well as the media and the general reader.
