Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is one of the six darsanas of Ancient Indian Philosophy. Yoga paradigm goes well beyond what is currently in vogue and provides a more fruitful model for studying and understanding human nature, both hidden and manifest. This volume thus provides the psychological context and the relevance of studies of yoga for advancing the existing psychological knowledge. Yoga psychology provides the foundation for Indian psychology, an emerging discipline, rooted in classical Indian tradition. The Yoga Sûtras were thus seen by all schools, not only as the orthodox manual for guidance in the techniques and practices of meditation, but also for the classical Indian position on the nature and function of mind and consciousness, for the mechanisms of action in the world and consequent rebirth, and for the metaphysical underpinnings and description of the attainment of mystical powers. The book explores the fact that Yoga is an ancient Indian art which has a greater relevance in today’s lifestyle. Apart from a holistic exercise for toned body muscles which also relieves physical pain, Yoga means to bind, reducing mental stress and centring mind and body.
